India cannot be blasé about change in any important capital in the world. Let's look at five key areas where US policy matters for India and how it may vary between Harris and Trump.
In Episode 1544 of CutTheClutter, Editor-in-Chief Shekhar Gupta looks at some top economists pointing to the pitfalls of ‘currency nationalism’ with data from 1991 to 2004.
Troops patrolled up to Patrolling Point (PP) 10 on Monday. Though there are PP 10, 11, 12, 12A & 13 in Depsang Plains, it was decided that only one or two PPs would be patrolled.
While we talk much about our military, we don’t put our national wallet where our mouth is. Nobody is saying we should double our defence spending, but current declining trend must be reversed.
S. GUPTA,”There is too much power in this office, too little accountability, too many temptations” Everything is said in this sentence. But your observation could apply to many other institutions. Behind your observation is the whole question of the neutrality of the institutions that are responsible for implementing government policy. Governments change, but institutions can not change according to the political color of the government. It is the whole question of the neutrality of the men and women who serve in these institutions – we could add the armed forces, the police ….. What do we teach to men and women who are trained in IAS, IPS, IFS, and universities? This is an important issue because we are a parliamentary system and not a presidential system, where we practice the spoil system. The evil is therefore in the deviation of the 1947 Constitution
Instead of just criticising CBI, let the problems be seen in wider context, origin and ramifications. Corruption is the word to be used for all what is to be seen around. The entire society and making of the society must be examined for ills existing every where, in all spheres- bureaucratic, business, political or public at large. In fact, the action for resurrection must start at school / college levels furthered to the employment levels on sociological, spiritual, psychological segment of all. Now question arises who will start the efforts – before the efforts need to be planned and formalised first before starting implementation. However, instead of feeling demoralised, a start has to be made. How and where and with what resources is to be carefully planned. This is a seed-level thinking. I also feel space starved now to make suggestions, right here; shall love to debate further. I am on (kka@kkaapl.com) and shall love to interact. Let us not feel dissident. An optimistic approach with positivity of infusion of sincerity needs to be aimed at.
Sir,
The article is factual. Its puts forth a panorama of events giving every ruling party its due in ruining the institution. Coming from a veteran journalist like you, a deeper analysis into the rot is expected may be as a sequel.
MODI is a kind of Politician that this country would never want to see again. He has notorious distinction of befriending opposition in AP by being in alliance with ruling Govt . That opposition is headed by a leader who has 11 CBI cases where he is NO.1 in all of them and NO.2 is also NO.2 of the party. Could you imagine a PM doing this by coming to power with claims of rooting out corruption and also so many other promises to boot ? During election campaign he said we will give SCS not for 5 years promised by MMS of UPA but for 10 years and finally dumped the alliance partner with none. AP WILL NEVER FORGIVE THIS PM FOR DAYLIGHT CHEATING.
Absolutely right. Modi is the kind of man who will lie in our face. He befriends the corrupt and uses immoral mean to come to or remain and power and pretends to be a saint.
A very intriguing aspect NOW is WHY Congress, which was shouting from the house tops that the CBI was totally subverted and destroyed, merely because its top boss was asked to just step aside for a very short while (NOT “REMOVED” as the Congress made it out to be) is completely silent, after the Supreme Court openly commented on the CVC’s findings, duly reported to it by the Supreme Court Judge appointed by it for the purpose. Was all that not a deliberate attempt at brain washing people against the Government, without anything tangible to support it?
Fortunately, the CBI – unlike its US counterpart, the FBI – is not responsible for counterintelligence. When the most powerful instrumentalities of the state are corroded and compromised to this extent, a lot can fall through the cracks.
Histrionics are ok but what is your conclusion, Shekhar. The article ends not with hopelessness but with lack of insight (stinks, not sure but polically correct.)
If you have guts then show it else remain political and politically correct.
If CMs Naidu and Mamta Banerji have acted within their powers to refuse entry to CBI in their respective states, then it’s an excellent move. Let Mr Modi see for himself what devastation he has done to this country before he leaves in 2019. No government has DESTROYED India in the entire 67 years after 1947 compared what Mr Modi has “accomplished” in his mere 5 years!
