The Pondicherry University-led research team, which discovered the harmless snake, has named it Irwin’s wolf snake, according to a study in Evolutionary Systematics.
According to the researchers, the small snakes, seen with black and yellow rings, diverged from the rest of the evolutionary tree of snakes about 50 million years ago.
Ahead of the nationwide Census exercise, government allocates Rs 6,000 crore for it; Rs 5,394 crore allocated for modernising infrastructure of internal security apparatus.
