Whatever be the political system of governance, people across nations aspire for an independent judicial system to serve them, said Gogoi at a Shanghai Cooperation Organisation conference.
Lavasa is next in line to become CEC and Justice Chandrachud a future CJI. While difficult, a vindictive govt or chief justice can damage their prospects.
The judiciary has become cocooned while being the supreme force for transparency elsewhere. The complainant against CJI Gogoi has laid bare this hypocrisy.

CJI has given a long lecture on independence of Judiciary. He seems to have a strong dislike of populism. Though he has used the word populism numerous times in his arguments but he has not defined this term. I don’t know what he has in his mind about populism when the democracy is all about populism. The constitution is itself a populist mandate otherwise it will be a dictatorship. Suppose tomorrow the people want to scrape the current constitution, what the judiciary will do. In fact nothing. In democracy Judiciary can never be above people. However, who has given judiciary the right to be as per their whims and fancies. Judiciary can get only those rights given to them by the people through the Constitution.
