While we talk much about our military, we don’t put our national wallet where our mouth is. Nobody is saying we should double our defence spending, but current declining trend must be reversed.
This hare brained, neo-liberal proposal, if and when it comes through will be a major leap towards privatization of the country’s natural resources, something the present government has been surely and doggedly trying to get done these last many years. The current gelding of the EIA, purpose and protocol, to let the largely private players have a field day (jungle mein mangal) is another example. India’s forests, especially the relatively better ones, are home to our teeming poor, both tribals and other forest dwellers. Nevertheless these forests provide a huge safety net for these poor in lean seasons and cycles of droughts/ floods, which are becoming more frequent and intense due to climate change. Handing them over to private players for captive, industrial plantations will ensure that the forest dwellers are further marginalized and once again made refugees in their own lands as has been the repeated outcome of our developmental history ! The specious argument that checks and monitoring will be inbuilt into this scheme is laughable given the historical records of grossly negligent and criminal forest governance which in the first place has brought us to this dubious distinction of proudly presiding over possibly the largest degraded forest tracts in the world!
Tribhuvan Darbari – Deforestation is one of the biggest issues. We really need to work on improving the present scenario and it is really great to see that at least the government seems to be worried in this direction. Nature has bestowed upon us all its wealth and the human being, on the contrary, has destroyed nature and hurt it very badly. Now, the time is to mend the mistakes that we have committed. #TribhuvanDarbari #DarbariTribhuvan #Tribhuvan #Darbari #Tribhuvan_Darbari
