1. HMT was the very first to make Quartz Analogue electronic watches in India. Well before Titan was born.
2. Titan watches were as sturdy as HMT. I still have a Titan made in 1987 which is still in perfect working condition.
The author would have done well to talk to any one of a dozen or so HMT alumni who also worked with Titan.
HMT as any other PSU has failed to upgrade it self not only in design but cost & quality wise also. Even upto 1990/92 some of the brand like HMT ROMAN etc., were doing fairly well. It is ironical that people who were scrambling to get new models & certain popular models both Men & Women were not available in general market. We do used to catch hold of the employees of the HMT in Bangalore unit to buy for us, for the two reasons one is employees will be getting preference on the model & up to Rs.50/-off/discount offered. Even we were ready to forgo the discount from employees but insist to get the particular model. Of course, most of them were used to pass on the discount amount to us.
Then entered TITAN with sleek model, attractive design with reliable quality & cost with Quartz technology which has captured the market over night. I remember when I wanted to change the case with general service after 10 years usage, which was showing perfect time, without any regular service, except battery change once in a year, the Lady in-charge of the Co.Service Centre has requested me to go for New watch for exchange as it works out to be much cheaper rather changing the spare part & service charges but I refused the offer, because I was tipped that this brand was too good especially the Quartz movement, may not the same quality of the new watches. Later on, while collecting the watch I was surprised to find out a discounted amount on my bill, I gave a puzzled look the Lady in-charge of the Co.’s service centre smilingly said she got a special sanction from their higher-ups in my case.
Basically the customers walked into their/HMT Market so it did not pursued the interest of the customers & thought that whatever they produce irrespective of quality & price there are ready customers for them, a business arrogance. By the time they were realized, & tried to introduce new product with new technology it was too late. simply produced & flooded the market with their product mindlessly without any proper market research, at the end it lead to close down. A good nostalgia. Tx.

HMT’s best ambassador was Mrs Gandhi, who wore a simple watch. True class.
