The dynamics between Europe and Russia have gone so south that mending fences looks like an uphill task—even as the US swings between sanctions and olive branches.
Centre for Science and Environment in new report makes case for rationalising GST on waste material, saying most informal operators can’t afford high tax & it also hinders recycling.
21st edition of annual joint military exercise will be held from 1 to 16 September, aimed at sharing military tech, operational best practices & disaster relief coordination methods.
Standing up to America is usually not a personal risk for a leader in India. Any suggestions of foreign pressure unites India behind who they see as leading them in that fight.
Some wrong assumptions. SL is not in a Chinese debt trap. Chinese debt are only 9% of SL’s foreign debt. Japanese debt is higher. Debt trap is due to commercial bonds to finance reconstruction of war ravaged Tamil areas. China refused to help with it. Like it or not China has the world’s largest economy in purchasing power parity terms. Four times larger than Indian economy. It makes perfect sense for SL to go with China. The entire South Asian region (except India) thinks and acts alike. The future of the South Asian region is with China.
You are good at dishing out propaganda in line with your masters – the Rajapakses. Chinese investments in Sri Lanka have not yielded dividends. Look at Hambantota Port and Mattala International Airport. The Modi administration undermined Chinese preeminence in Sri Lanka in 2015 with the regime change in Sri Lanka. Yahapalanaya failed and the Rajapakse’s returned. Let’s see for how long. China was similarly checked by India in the Maldives with democratic elections and a change in Government. Nepal’s Oli took an anti-India stand. Indian behind the scenes intervention divided his Government with Prachanda challenging Oli. Indian foreign policy always acts behind the scenes.
Chinese investment in Sri Lanka has not yielded significant results. Once India stops transshipment from Colombo port to its ports, there would be nothing. You are as uninformed in your arguments as the ill-informed and spineless author of this piece – Seshadri Chari.
Seshadri Chari is not well versed on Sri Lanka. The Government of Sri Lanka is playing for time by offering the West Port which will be similarly canceled. China is currently eyeing the entire port of Colombo and it opposes any Indian presence. Seshadri suggests wholesale surrender. Further there are many reports of hostile encroachment by Buddhist hardliners on old Hindu temple grounds. Suggest that Sheshadri first learn Sri Lanka and then write! Further, the Government should not rely on the advice of half baked individuals from the Organizer who seem to think that Indian fishermen lives do not matter.
India must waste no time or resources on it’s dysfunctional neighborhood. If China wishes to play big brother, nursemaid and benefactor to all these countries so be it. India must focus on sorting out it’s own issues including the economy. Better relations will follow automatically.
The only dysfunctional part of this neighbourhood is india that has problems with al it’s neighbours
Only one solution, build a deep sea port in Andoman & Nicobar and get back Indian traffic from Sri Lanka port, which is 70% out of it’s total port calls. Hit where it hurts.
