Over 90% of the heat trapped by greenhouse gases has gone into our oceans. And as of April this year, the world’s average ocean temperature has been the highest ever recorded.
A study was conducted in 391 coral reefs across 67 nations, to study population of 5 key species — Caribbean reef shark, nurse shark, grey reef shark, blacktip reef shark and whitetip reef shark.
Estimates indicate that coral reefs account for $2.7 trillion per year in ecosystem service value. And yet, we have lost 50 per cent of the world’s reefs.
Corals found in the Kutch are more temperature-tolerant, and can, therefore, improve resilience in the reefs in Lakshadweep and help sustain marine ecosystems.
The research, published in Nature Communications, says playing sounds of healthy reefs lure fish — which are extremely important for coral reefs to function — back to dead reefs.
This is the game every nation is now learning to play. Some are finding new allies or seeing value among nations where they’d seen marginal interest. The starkest example is India & Europe.
