Present situation reminds of the attitude of Britain, France towards Hitler just before the commencement of world war II. They yielded miles, when Hitler wanted inches. That did not avoid the war. India too has been shortsighted, trying to appease China through informal summits. Modi committed a Nehruvian blunder by trusting the Chinese. There can be no doubt that India alone has to face the burden of resisting China at its borders. Western countries won’t even supply weapons free of cost as US did to Pakistan.
With China’s rise, the world may go towards another cold-war. However it’ll be folly to discard Russia and also India. India has always maintained its own independent stance even when USA vs Russia was at its peak. India is too big to simply side with one side. India has to maintain relationships which are beneficial to itself. As far as systems of governance, cultural assimilation, social values are concerned India is well-entrenched with the West. But on the military front, India is maintaining a balance between Russia and USA, and its also increasing relations with France and Israel. This is a very good pragmatic step and India should keep on maintaining this balance.
