If only Rajiv Gandhi had listened to him during the Shah Bano episode, modern Indian history would have been completely different. Arif, despite being a devout Muslim, had the courage to stand up for Muslim women’s rights and push back against the regressive Islamic clergy. But Rajiv Gandhi cowered and yielded to the Mullahs.
