But he never bowed before these regressive elements and always stood up for what he believed to be in the best interest of his community.. He has been the most forceful proponent for modernisation and incorporation of progressive ideals and ethos in Indian Muslim societies.
If only Rajiv Gandhi had listened to him during the Shah Bano episode, modern Indian history would have been completely different. Arif, despite being a devout Muslim, had the courage to stand up for Muslim women’s rights and push back against the regressive Islamic clergy. But Rajiv Gandhi cowered and yielded to the Mullahs.
