The Aam Aadmi Party, or AAP, is a political party founded by Arvind Kejriwal in 2012. It was born out of a civil society movement — Indian Against Corruption — that received massive popular support in 2011-12 after public anger over corruption charges on the then Congress-led UPA government.
It won its first elections in Delhi in 2013, and came to power with outside support from the Congress. But the government lasted only 49 days as Kejriwal resigned since he was unable to pass the Jan Lokpal Bill in the Delhi Assembly. The AAP returned to power in 2015, when fresh elections were held, and swept the Delhi elections winning 67 of 70 seats. The first few issues tackled by AAP were the fraudulent inflation of water and electricity bills, promising the people of Delhi certain free units of electricity.
The AAP government in Delhi has been in a tussle with the BJP-ruled central government and the Lieutenant Governor (L-G) over the division of powers. Kejriwal and several AAP leaders and ministers face corruption charges related to alleged irregularities in the 2021-22 Delhi excise policy case. The case has already landed former Delhi deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia, Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh, and AAP campaign manager Vijay Nair in jail.
The tussle is notbetween Modiji or Kejriwalji as has been made out but between the Centre and the NCT. The matter is in the Supreme Court.
If the UPA has not given statehood despite the NCT government ruled by the Congress, there must be compelling reasons . I believe that even if Kejriwalji were to become the PM, he would not be able to give statehood.
Would the Central Government come under State Government if Delhi is made the full State. Let the propagtors of this line reflect and answer.
Cs was not assulted it was a propaganda. Even beauracates some time thrase Aap Mla becouse they know delhi govt have no power.
Be it a full state or the present status, no CM can work with an attitude of “Delhi ke malik hum hein”.
LG is no doubt a representative if Center, but same is the Governor in any other state.
Actually, misbehaving the Chief Secretory was deliberate and pre-planned, as CM didn’t tried to justify or apologize for the incident since Feb 2018. He was fully aware of the consequences of such incident that the bureaucracy will go non-coprative after it. For period of 4 months since Feb 2018 the CM never tried to have a dialogue with them.
Let us shift the national capital to some new union territory and grant statehood to Delhi.
Article 370 of the Constitution applicable to J&K should now cover Delhi too so that the Central Govt cannot interfere in the governance of Delhi. Away with feku and pappu.
It is waste of tax payers money that’s used to run the capital through elected representatives. Bureaucrats are good enough with a LG to provide efficient, quick and clean governance to the capital. By giving full statehood, the corruption only will increase. It’s good to keep union territories as they are without playing to the public or political sentiments.
Critical issue well analysed. Yes , it’s a policy matter that makes our daily lives in Delhi hell. The situation for Delhi is what is called as, Trishankhu. An unenviable position. A shame for a national capital.
Delhi deserves full statehood. Both national parties have promised it in the past. There are security concerns for senior functionaries, where the SPG and other agencies can coordinate with Delhi Police, as they do with other states when the dignitaries are travelling. Even till the constitutional status of the city state changes, occasions for the LG to assert his authority should be few and far between. A government voted in on a 67 / 70 tsunami should be allowed to do its own thing. It is answerable to the most literate and discerning electorate in the country.
