Shaili Singh, Dev Meena to spearhead Indian challenge in Asian U23 Athletics C’ships in China

New Delhi, Jun 4 (PTI) Talented pole vaulters Dev Kumar Meena and Kuldeep Kumar, long jumper Shaili Singh and javelin thrower Shivam Lohakare were on Thursday named in India’s 54-member team for the inaugural Asian U23 Athletics Championships to be held in Ordos, China, from July 9 to 12.

Both Meena and Kuldeep set a new national record (5.45m) in pole vault while Shivam won the javelin gold with a throw of 81.71m at the Federation Cup in Ranchi last month.

Shaili won a silver medal in women’s long jump at the 2021 World U20 Athletics Championships in Nairobi, Kenya. The Uttar Pradesh long jumper has been competing at the senior level too and has a personal best of 6.76m, national U20 record. She won a silver in Ranchi with a jump of 6.58m.

“Youngsters in the national team will surely make a big impression in next month’s Asian U23 track and field meet in China,” said Athletics Federation of India (AFI) President Bahadur Singh Sagoo.

Uttar Pradesh’s rising 3000m steeplechaser Sharuk Khan is also among 31 male athletes in the team.

Aarti, who won a bronze medal in women’s 10,000m race walk at the 2024 World U20 Athletics Championships in Lima, Peru, is another youngster to watch out for. She will compete in the 21km race walk in China.
