Chandigarh, Sep 13 (PTI) Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Sunday said the inaugural Sher-e-Punjab T20 Cricket League will provide a platform for the state’s emerging cricketers to showcase their talent and make their way to the national stage.

Mann attended the closing ceremony of the inaugural league at the IS Bindra Stadium in Mohali, where 119 players got an opportunity to showcase their skills.

He said the Punjab government is committed to making the state a sports hub and will continue its efforts to revive the sporting culture and encourage the youth to take up sports.

Interacting with players at the conclusion of the two-week-long league, Mann said the tournament was organised for the first time by the Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) and had provided an opportunity for emerging cricketers from the state to showcase their skills.

“I congratulate the Punjab Cricket Association for the successful conduct of this league and extend my best wishes to all the participating teams and all the other teams for the upcoming season,” he said.

“During this two-week-long league, several promising young cricketers from the villages and towns of Punjab came into the limelight. Many of these talented players are likely to go on to represent Punjab and India in the years to come.

“As many as 21 players from Punjab are currently playing in the IPL. During the Sher-e-Punjab T20 League, talent scouts and selectors from various IPL teams also attended the matches. Following this league, we are hopeful that several more talented cricketers from Punjab will earn opportunities to play for different IPL teams,” he added.

Six teams participated in the league, with Fazilka Falcons led by Shubman Gill, Ludhiana Lions led by Arshdeep Singh, Amritsar Surmaaz led by Abhishek Sharma, Jalandhar Warriors led by Prabhsimran Singh, Mohali Kings led by Ramandeep Singh and Bathinda Royals led by Gurnoor Brar. PTI CHS ATK

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
