Norway’s kit revives 1,500-year-old Norse script in FIFA World Cup. It’s a cultural identity

New Delhi: At the 2026 FIFA World Cup, football kits don’t just serve the purpose of sportswear. In many cases, they are symbols of cultural and national identity, and put simply, brilliant examples of storytelling on football’s highest stage. Norway is the biggest example in this year’s tournament.

For their 2026 FIFA World Cup kit, Norway have teamed up with sportswear giant Nike to create a custom typeface inspired by the Elder Futhark, which is the oldest form of the Norse runic alphabet.

Historically, it was used by the Germanic tribes across Northwest Europe and Scandinavia during the Migration Period (100 – 500 CE). During this period, large-scale migrations of people took place across the European continent, leading, in part, to the collapse of the Roman Empire in Western Europe. The Elder Futhark was the precursor to the famous Scandinavian runes that would later dominate much of the Viking-era societies.

Though the Elder Futhark has been widely associated with people living in Scandinavia, this form of the runic alphabet was in widespread use across much of what is now Northern Germany, apart from Poland, Ukraine, and Romania.

Nike and the Norway National Team have taken inspiration from the centuries-old alphabet, given it a modern spin, and as a result, have one of the most distinct-looking kits in North America this summer. Notably, the jersey numbers and names on the kits are printed in the typeface of the ancient script. The kit is a unique ode to the Scandinavian nation’s Viking past, married to Nike’s latest fabric technologies.

It is worth noting that this is not Norway’s first attempt to display its rich Viking heritage on the football pitch. They have experimented with rune-inspired fonts previously as well. However, past kits often faced criticism from fans and football analysts for being notoriously hard to read, making the game difficult to follow.

‘Norway’s jersey caught attention’

Norway’s kit has taken the internet by storm with social users calling it a “typography masterclass.”

“Best thing about the World Cup? Norway’s font,” an X user posted.

Another X user posted, “If the World Cup were determined by the best kits, Norway would have already won it.  Home and Away.”

Meanwhile, another X user pointed to the ban which occurred in 2024.

“Norway’s jersey caught attention at the World Cup for its typography inspired by the Nordic Elder Futhark runes. The concept had already been used in 2024, but FIFA banned the design due to lack of legibility. For the tournament, Nike simplified the characters and ensured clearer readability, while maintaining the Viking identity that won over fans around the world,” the user posted.

Drawn in Group I of the tournament, Norway are currently in second position. They will be facing France at the Boston Stadium early Saturday.
