New Delhi: Jamshed Jiji Irani, known as the ‘Steel Man of India,’ left an unforgettable mark on the Tata legacy during his four-decade tenure with the Tata Group. In his memoir, ‘Doctor Steel,’ he reflects on his transformative journey with Tatas, spanning forty-three years, where he played a pivotal role in reshaping Tata Steel into one of the world’s most cost-effective steel producers.

The book traces Irani’s journey with Tatas, highlighting his achievements and contributions to Indian society. The chapters, dictated by Irani himself, provide a firsthand account.

Published by Penguin India, ‘Doctor Steel,’ by J.J. Irani, will be released on 23 November on SoftCover, ThePrint’s online venue to launch non-fiction books.

Irani began his journey with The Tata Iron and Steel Company, now Tata Steel, as an Assistant to the Director in charge of Research and Development in 1968. His illustrious career culminated in the role of Managing Director in 1992 before retiring in 2001.

Irani, fondly known as ‘Doc,’ played a pivotal role in revolutionising the steel industry in the country, propelling the nation into a new era of economic growth. He spearheaded Tata Steel during the economic liberalisation of the early 1990s, contributing significantly to India’s global presence.

The book’s chapters, stemming from candid conversations between Irani and N.K. Sharan in the months before the former’s passing, reflects on this journey.

Discussing Irani’s book, Harish Bhat, Brand Custodian of Tata Sons and author of “#Tatastories,” commended his leadership, emphasising that the book unveils a man who guided Tata Steel with unwavering ‘resolve, integrity, warmth, and humanity.’

Honoring Irani, who passed away last October, A.M. Mishra, former chairman of Tata Sponge Iron, described him as someone who possessed qualities that ‘leaders are made of.’

Mishra acclaimed the book, describing it as a tribute to a corporate leader of his stature.

“The purpose of telling this story is not merely to revere the dead but to inspire the living— the bearers of his legacy. Dr. Irani is not with us, yet he lives on in our memory,” he added.
