New Delhi: Shiv Sena (Uddhav Thackeray) leader and MP Sanjay Raut has written to the United Nations demanding that 20 June be declared “World Traitor Day”.

Why? This is the day last year when former colleague and present Chief Minister Eknath Shinde had incited a rebellion in the party, splitting it from the middle. The revolt against Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray saw his government crash, and was subsequently replaced by a coalition of the rebels with the BJP.

In the letter, Raut said: “They deserted Uddhav Thackeray who was an ailing man and who underwent two major surgeries on November 12 and November 19. Each one of them took advantage of his illness.”

Hence, 20 June should be designated a day when the world will remember traitors, Raut said.

This demand was first raised by former minister and Uddhav Thackeray’s son Aaditya Thackeray.

At the Maharashtra-level plenary of the Shiv Sena (UBT) on Sunday, Thackeray said in his speech, “On 19 June, we would celebrate the Shiv Sena ‘vardhapan din’ (foundation day)… on 20 June it’s World Traitors’ Day.”

Earlier, Sharad Pawar’s Nationalist Congress Party, which was part of the united Shiv Sena’s Mahavikas Aghadi government along with the Congress, had said that 20 June should be called “Gaddar Diwas” and appealed to NCP workers to celebrate it as such.

Last year, the rebellion of around 40 Sena MLAs brought down the Uddhav Thackeray-led government. After Shinde formed the present government with the BJP, he retained the Sena’s original name and party symbol. The rebel faction now claims to be the “real Shiv Sena”.
