New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi Wednesday lashed out at the Opposition in Uttar Pradesh over triple talaq and said previous governments had failed to take care of the “needs and problems” of women in the state.

“Previous govts had closed their eyes from the needs and problems of our daughters… I would like to ask dynasts who say that they have a family and know the pain of families, why did they not care about Muslim daughters? They had to return to their father’s home with their young children,” PM Modi was quoted as saying by ANI.

The controversial Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill was passed by the Opposition-dominated Rajya Sabha in 2019. The law criminalises the practice of Muslim men instantly divorcing their wives by uttering ‘talaq’ thrice.

Speaking at a rally in Barabanki ahead of the polls on 27 February, Modi also said the development of Uttar Pradesh “gives speed” to India’s growth.

“The ability of the people of UP enhances the ability of the people of India. But for several decades in UP, the dynasty-oriented governments did not do justice to the ability of UP,” he added.

Calling the previous Uttar Pradesh governments “dynasts”, the PM also said, “Dynasts want the poor to always be at their feet and keep revolving around them. We care for the poor and we are working to address their troubles.”

Polling for the fourth phase of Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections began in 59 constituencies at 7 AM on Wednesday. The state is witnessing a multi-cornered contest with BJP, Samajwadi Party (SP)-Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) alliance, and the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and Congress as principal contenders.
