New Delhi: Congress Saturday announced veteran leader from Uttar Pradesh, Pramod Tiwari, will take over as the party’s deputy leader in Rajya Sabha, while Jammu and Kashmir in-charge and Maharashtra leader Rajni Patil, has been made its whip in the Upper House.

“Chairperson of the Congress Parliamentary Party (CPP), Smt. (Srimati) Sonia Gandhi, has approved the appointments of Shri Pramod Tiwari as Deputy Leader & Smt. Rajani Patil as Whip of the Congress Party in the Rajya Sabha. The Chairman of the Rajya Sabha has been informed of these appointments”, said Congress general secretary in-charge for communications, Jairam Ramesh, in a tweet Saturday.

Tiwari, one of the party’s last remaining big leaders in Uttar Pradesh is a Rajya Sabha MP from Rajasthan, elected last year. His daughter, Aradhana Misra ‘Mona’ is one the Congress’ only two MLA in the UP assembly, having won her father’s Rampur Khas seat.

Rajini Patil, on the other hand, was elected unopposed in 2021. This is her second Rajya Sabha term. She’s known to be a trusted confidante of the Gandhis.

Last month, during the Budget session of the Parliament, Patil was suspended from the Rajya Sabha for allegedly shooting a video of opposition ruckus in the House during PM Modi’s speech.
