War in CBI is out in the open: Exposing fault lines in India’s top investigating agency, the CBI has written to the Central Vigilance Commission (CVC), saying its second most senior officer, special director Rakesh Asthana, does not have the mandate to represent its chief, reports The Indian Express. It has further stated that several officers being considered for induction in the agency “were under examination by the CBI as suspects/ accused in criminal cases…”

Minister says Aadhaar data cannot be hacked. Stating that the database couldn’t be hacked “even in a billion attempts”, union minister for electronics and information technology Ravi Shankar Prasad said Aadhaar was a home-grown technology and was “completely safe and secure”, reports Hindustan Times.

‘Not happy, swallowing pain like Lord Shiva who drank poison,’ says Kumaraswamy. Karnataka CM of 54 days, H.D. Kumaraswamy said he was unhappy, apparently referring to difficulties in his party’s alliance with the Congress. However, Karnataka deputy chief minister G. Parameshwara sought to play down Kumaraswamy’s comments, insisting the chief minister “was happy and had to be so”, reports Hindustan Times.

WhatsApp rumour leads to another death. A 32-year-old software engineer was beaten to death and three others — one of them a Qatar national — were seriously injured over WhatsApp-driven rumours of child kidnapping in Karnataka’s Bidar, reports NDTV. The rumour is believed to have led to 30 deaths so far.

Govt wants more power for NIA. The NDA government wants to expand the mandate of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) and give it powers to probe human trafficking, weapons dealers, hacking of important websites, and violations of the explosives law, reports The Indian Express.

‘Don’t want to control social media,’ says minister. Facing flak over the Centre’s proposal to set up a social media hub to “collect digital chatter”, union minister Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore said Sunday that the government had “no plan to control social media” and blamed the Congress for “creating an environment of fear”, reports PTI.

Peak hour flights may get costlier with new AAI plan. The government is mulling a proposal to impose a surcharge on airlines for operating flights during peak hours to enhance airport capacity and avoid flight delays, reports The Hindu.

Trump administration tightens visa rules even further. The Trump administration has empowered officials to reject visa applications outright under certain circumstances, reports The Times of India. “In some cases, outright denial of the application, say for the extension of an H-1B visa, could even put employees at the risk of deportation,” the report added.
