Fashion is fast and fickle, and Indians are always looking to step up their game. The past year was no different. From bold colours that stand out to tiny bags that can barely hold anything, 2023 was a rollercoaster ride for fashion enthusiasts.
Much of the year’s fashion was dominated by tradition mixed with the contemporary and Western. Many of these trends, which were started by celebrities, spread like wildfire on metropolitan streets.
Here are five fashion trends that went viral in 2023 in India.
Alia Bhatt’s sarees
The Bollywood star set the fashion scene ablaze with the sarees she wore in her recent movie Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani. From pastel-coloured georgette saree to the fuschia and lime green chiffon one, Alia’s on-screen wardrobe became a sensation so big that thrift stores brought out cheap replicas in droves. Fashion influencers on Instagram and YouTube came up with content on ‘how to dress up like Alia Bhatt from RRKPK’. The Manish Malhotra collection became an iconic pick for Indian women, and many ‘Ranis’ are still seen sporting the sarees at weddings, workplaces, and parties.
Sneakers
Indians went back to the ’70s and ’80s when it came to footwear. Once used only as sportswear for working out, running, or playing tennis, sneakers have made a big comeback as statement pieces. They are everywhere this year — local parks, basketball courts, gyms, nightclubs, and even workplaces. From Vans, Nike, and Campus to Hrithik Roshan’s own HRX, sneakers are ruling the roost.
Bucket bags
In 2023, Indians said goodbye to totes and made way for bucket bags. As is the wont, Bollywood fashionistas started the trend, Instagram influencers followed next, and now, these fashionable yet functional bags are thronging local markets across India. With sleek leather, intricate embroidery, bold prints, and vibrant hues, these bags are perfect for those who want to look stylish yet carry their entire wardrobe outdoors.
Orry’s phone covers
Besides being popular as the best friend of many B-town celebrities, Orry is known for making a fashion statement with his phone covers, and we are all for it. From quirky ones to giant banana or spider-shaped covers, Orry’s phone covers are now a fashion accessory. A must-have for those who want to showcase their personality through their devices.
Birkenstock
Ever since German footwear brand Birkenstock introduced its leather-and-cork sandals to provide comfort and durability, the fashion world hasn’t stopped buying them. And Indians, with their love for versatility and longevity, are right at the forefront of the haul. Whether you are wearing a salwar kameez or summer dress, ‘birks’ can instantly lift the look. Although slightly on the expensive side, these chunky sandals add a touch of effortless swagger to every ensemble.
