Delhi Comic Con is proof that Indians are great at ‘jugaad’

Delhi Comic Con is all about pizza, chai, cosplay and merchandise. This year, there is also a ‘star’ attraction from Game of Thrones.

The Delhi Comic Con is not really a comic convention. Think of it as more of a merchandise haven — desi, American and rip-offs.

For the uninitiated, Comic Cons are comic book conventions where fans, writers and artists meet. The New York Comic Con was the first such official event to be held in 1964.

Unlike the mega multi-genre San Diego Comic Con where Hollywood stars, directors, writers and fans gather by the thousands, the Delhi Comic Con welcomed just Vladimir Furdik, the actor who plays the Night King in television drama Game of Thrones. Frankly, he could have been anyone, since the Night King is a largely CGI and prosthetics character. There were also a few artists present from the Marvel and DC universe, but unlike the Doritos being given at the entrance, their autographs weren’t free — perhaps why their stalls looked mostly empty.

Though the number of cosplayers has increased in the last few years, it seems India still cannot get over Heath Ledger’s Joker, Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine, and of course, Harry Potter. During my trip this year, I spotted at least four Wolverines and six Jokers (only one of them looked convincing) and about a dozen Hogwarts-bound men, women and children. Of the more encouraging trends, women are cosplaying as well and not just as Harley Quinn.

The focus of Delhi’s Comic Con is not just comic books and mangas but also pop culture — which is why it has turned into a merchandise haven. You can buy just about everything — from pyjamas to posters, caricatures to clocks, t-shirts to toys. For the discerning action figure collector, who can shell out anywhere between Rs 2,000 and Rs 15,000 for one, finding the right piece among the run-of-the-mill Deadpools, Batmans, Wonder Womans can be quite the task.

Look through all the commercial stalls and you may find a great Indian graphic artist quietly drawing away.

After spending the day at Comic Con in the national capital, if there’s one thing to learn about Indians it is this: We are great at jugaad. Too long a walk from the main entrance to the Comic Con grounds? Keep e-rickshaws ready. Cosplaying Harry Potter but have no props? Your everyday jhadu becomes a broom. Can’t find anything edgy to wear? Your New Year devil hair bands can come to the rescue.

The Delhi Comic Con has become one grand family event. Buy some toys, play some games, pose with Aquaman and sit in the lawns after with your family. Pizza, chai, cosplay — what else does one need?

  1. Subscribe what?? A piece of sh*t which probably gonna be ignored by most of the people because of the negative and depressing content you have written? Overlooking the positive ones how do you manage to see so many lacking in an event where people go to enjoy themselves and pop culture. It was an absolutely well managed event with lots of activities, whereas you only see and write cons (not really) of an event people have accepted from the bottom of their hearts. So have you ever tried to put your thoughts into one line? And tried to atleast make a super hero mask so that you can wear it? No? Okay we get it that you arent a person who could appreciate .. all you see is broomsticks.. and jugaad. People are putting efforts to make it more happening and whereas guy like you who doesnt even know what efforts are with such events.. coming up with such an absolute crap.

  2. As @geekstradamus said its just a dumb article
It was great weekend for me and for all my friends
The person who wrote this dont know anything

  3. Apparently the person who wrote this wasn’t able to enjoy the comic Con in any way possible or perhaps he was there to just criticize the idea of comic con, where people not only from Delhi but also from other states come to enjoy the three day once a year event. Among those people there seem to be person who just wants to get attention and jealous of the attention other were getting starts to find negative things in every aspect.
So much that he/she couldn’t comprehend the idea that the shops offering merchandise which wasn’t available in the market in India would be crowded.

Indians are great at jugaad. Of they are! Can’t think of something to write criticize it, allows me to gain attention and make me a good guy who envy’s the event so much that it doesn’t meet his high expectations and the poor guy is sad and wants to give some pointers.

Also any person having painted his face the was joker did(not only Heath Ledger but Jack Nicholson or Jared Leto) or wearing a scarf from Hogwarts is cosplaying. They might also just want to get a picture of them dressed up as that and also the resources to do so might be available there. Had you been so interested in watching cosplayers I suggest you could have waited for a little longer so that you could see the cosplay action right on the stage! Like where they wanted you to see them.

I pretty sorry that Doritos wanted to sponsor the event by providing free Doritos to everybody there and you trying to use their goodwill to mock the artists there from DC and Marvel universe. You might want to rethink if you want to mock actors who are actually able to provide entertainment to the viewers.

  4. This is dumb article written by a person clueless about the subject.I was there for three days and saw at least 200 cosplayers a day varying from characters from Sacred Games, Scooby Doo, Animes like black clover,Gintama,Fairy tail etc and this is just scratching the surface.

Autographs are always charged across all comic cons across the world.Night was not just CGI but prosthetics,

Comparing this with San Diego comic con is stupid….considering India is still full of clueless reporters like you who show wrong picture since they are ignorant.

Comic Con India was best three days for me this year, where I met amazing people and lot of hard working cosplayers.

  5. Now this is what happens when you have a person clueless about a subject asked to write on it.The issue here is not what people cosplayed as , but rather the people he recognized. He only knew Wolverine, Joker and Harry potters from the lot.I was there all three days…and there was a huge mix of cosplay. There were Gaitonde,Bunty(Sacred Games), Asta(Black Clover),Naruto, Goku, Gohan, Wilma(Scooby Doo), bunch of other Naruto characters and i have not even begun scratching the surface of it. Unfortunately the reported does not recognize them. The three days were awesome and i made so many new friends.Unfortunately reporters like these ruin it for everyone without even knowing what they are reporting.
