The selected cartoons appeared first in other publications, either in print, online, or on social media, and are credited appropriately.

Today’s featured cartoon refers to the triumphant win of Bilkis Bano at the Supreme Court. The court ordered that Bano’s convicted rapists, who had been let out by the Gujarat high court, should be sent back to prison within 14 days.

Sajith Kumar’s cartoon, too, refers to the Bilkis Bano judgment. While the Gujarat court’s decision was criticised by many as a loss for women’s rights and justice, the SC’s recent judgment restored hope in the promise that Bilkis Bano’s rapists would be served the justice they deserved.

Sandeep Adhwaryu’s illustration is a clever play on the air quality index in New Delhi and the ‘temporary’ relief provided by the Supreme Court to the Bilkis Bano case. The cartoon likens the SC’s judgment to a reduction in AQI, metaphorically indicating a ‘clearer view’ after the fog of uncertainty.

Cartoonist Alok | Twitter/@caricatured

Cartoonist Alok refers to the recent row in the Maharashtra assembly over the disqualification pleas against CM Eknath Shinde’s government. The Opposition led by Uddhav Thackeray has filed petitions seeking the disqualification of the Shinde faction rebel MLAs.

R Prasad | Twitter/@rprasad66

R Prasad’s cartoon also makes reference to the Bilkis Bano judgment. His cartoon points out how the public is thankful to the court for not showing mercy to the brutal rapists of Bano and instead sending them back to jail.
