Rupnagar, Jul 28 (PTI) Punjab Youth Congress workers on Tuesday staged a protest outside the residence of Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains here, demanding his resignation over alleged paper leak incidents in the state.
Led by Punjab Youth Congress president Shubham Sharma, protesters clashed with police and broke through barricades before reaching the minister’s residence.
They staged a sit-in and smeared black paint on the signboard outside the residence as a mark of protest.
As the minister was not present, the tehsildar of Anandpur Sahib accepted a memorandum from the protesters.
In the memorandum, the Youth Congress demanded Bains’ resignation and warned that if he failed to step down within five days, the organisation would gherao his office in Chandigarh and burn effigies of the minister and the Punjab government at district headquarters across the state.
Addressing the protesters, Sharma alleged that several examination papers had been leaked during Bains’ tenure and claimed that no accountability had been fixed so far. He said the minister should resign on moral grounds.
Referring to the NEET paper leak issue, Sharma said that protests over the matter had led to the resignation of Union minister Dharmendra Pradhan and asserted that “now it is Harjot Bains’ turn.” The Youth Congress leader further alleged that senior Aam Aadmi Party leaders, including Arvind Kejriwal, Manish Sisodia and Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, had earlier stated that the minister concerned would resign if a paper leak occurred in Punjab.
He alleged that the party was now going back on its promise and said the Youth Congress would continue its agitation until the minister resigned.
