Pune, Sep 18 (PTI) Vice President C P Radhakrishnan on Friday said yoga provides balance, awareness and concentration amid the stress caused by technology-driven lifestyles and the fast pace of modern life.

Addressing the 75th anniversary celebrations of the Gordhandas Seksaria College of Yoga and Cultural Synthesis at Kaivalyadhama here, Radhakrishnan said yoga helps establish balance between the mind, body and spirit, and enables people to lead healthier lives.

“In today’s stressful lifestyle, yoga gives a person an opportunity to pause, think, focus on one’s breath and reconnect with oneself,” he said, adding that yoga helps improve concentration and maintain balance between the mind and body.

Radhakrishnan said the teachings of Maharshi Patanjali remained relevant even in an age marked by a continuous flow of information.

Yoga has gained wide global recognition, he said, noting that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had highlighted its importance at the United Nations General Assembly in 2014, following which June 21 was declared International Day of Yoga.

People from different countries and cultures are coming together through yoga, the Vice President said.

India’s young population is a major strength of the country and the energy, skills and aspirations of the youth can be developed more effectively when combined with discipline and awareness, he said, adding that yoga can play an important role in this process.

Referring to Kaivalyadhama’s contribution to yoga education, research and culture, Radhakrishnan said Swami Kuvalayananda founded the institution in 1924 for the scientific study of yoga, laying the foundation for its systematic and scientific exploration.

He said institutions such as Kaivalyadhama have the responsibility of preserving the rich heritage of yoga and taking it forward to future generations.

Maharashtra Governor Jishnu Dev Varma said India must preserve yoga’s fundamental knowledge, scientific basis and connection with its original philosophy as its popularity grows globally.

Yoga can promote physical fitness, mental balance and overall well-being, he said.

Varma described Kaivalyadhama as a matter of pride for India.

The Gordhandas Seksaria College’s 75th anniversary was not merely a celebration of an institution’s journey but also of 75 years of preserving and disseminating India’s rich knowledge tradition, he said.

Former Union minister and Kaivalyadhama chairman Suresh Prabhu said the institution intends to make its knowledge, experience and rich tradition in yoga available for the welfare of people across the world.

A book containing letters written by Swami Kuvalayananda was released at the event. PTI MR KRK

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
