Thane, Jun 21 (PTI) On the occasion of the International Day of Yoga, a special yoga session was organised inside the Thane Central Jail on Sunday, said officials.
The programme was held in collaboration with Thane-based Ghantali Mitra Mandal, a yoga institution, they said.
Jail Superintendent Rani Bhosale said they regularly hold yoga workshops for inmates to ensure that they are positively occupied.
Officials said a “Yoga for Jail Inmates” project was launched at the Thane facility nearly four decades ago, and various prisons across the country adopted the reformatory model later.
The main government event for the Thane district was held at the Taluka Sports Complex in Kopri in the city, where several citizens, athletes, and top dignitaries participated.
In neighbouring Navi Mumbai, more than 5,000 citizens gathered at the CIDCO Exhibition Center in Vashi to mark the yoga day.
Meanwhile, the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority, India’s largest container port, also observed the day on its premises, said officials. Port employees and CISF (Central Industrial Security Force) personnel participated in the event, they said. PTI COR NR
