Guwahati, May 2 (PTI) Eminent academician C Raj Kumar has asserted that the world has a lot to learn from India’s transformative journey as the country approaches a hundred years of its independence from British rule.
Addressing the 11th Professor Sarat Mahanta Memorial Lecture here on Friday evening, Prof Kumar pointed out that the year 2047 would represent not just a milestone in India’s modern political history, but should be seen as a fascinating evolution of one of the world’s oldest continuous civilisations into a modern democratic republic.
The Vice Chancellor of O.P. Jindal Global University and a globally renowned legal academician, Kumar traced the arc from India’s deep civilisational roots through colonial disruption to constitutional rebirth.
He highlighted how India’s identity has been shaped by the interplay of tradition, institutional development and technological progress.
He pointed out that India’s ancient knowledge systems and ethical frameworks of justice, rooted in dharma that provided a strong civilisational foundation.

India is poised to emerge as a global leader that harmonises innovation with inclusion, scale with sustainability and growth with ethical governance by the time it celebrates its centenary in 2047, he said.
A Rhodes scholar and an alumnus of Oxford and Harvard Universities, Kumar had taught law at the City University of Hong Kong.
In his inaugural address, Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya said the annual lecture serves to “reinforce our collective commitment to knowledge, critical thinking and nation-building”.
“As India marches toward completing 100 years of its Independence, it is imperative that we envision a future that is inclusive, just and innovation-driven,” the governor said.
Since education constitutes the fundamental bedrock of India’s progress, it is necessary to cultivate and education system that is not confined merely to dissemination of knowledge, but also fosters moral values, creativity and a sense of social responsibility among students, he said.
Former judge of the Supreme Court of Hawaii, Justice Michael D Wilson highlighted the pioneering role of India in shaping global jurisprudence.
He also underscored the importance of sustainability and balancing developmental goals with environmental conservation.
The Prof Sarat Mahanta Memorial Lecture is held annually and, in previous years, has featured eminent economists, academicians, journalists, authors and politicians from India and abroad. PTI DG DG RG
