Gurugram, Oct 11 (PTI) A 63-year-old woman was killed and her husband critically injured after being run over by a speeding SUV while they were sleeping near Airia Mall on Sohna Road here on Sunday morning, police said.

The deceased, identified as Chirnji Devi, was a resident of Mahoba district in Uttar Pradesh. Her husband, Natthu Ram, 66, is undergoing treatment at a hospital, they said.

The accident occurred around 5 am when the driver of the SUV (Toyota Fortuner) — travelling from Badshahpur towards Sohna — allegedly lost control of the vehicle, mounted the pavement and hit the couple.

After running them over, the vehicle allegedly continued ahead and crashed into a crane parked on the footpath. The airbags deployed upon impact, police said.

According to eyewitnesses, a man and a woman were inside the Fortuner. Both allegedly fled the scene after the accident, leaving the vehicle behind.

The injured couple was taken to a hospital, where Devi succumbed to her injuries, while her husband remained in critical condition, police said.

An FIR was registered at Badshahpur police station based on a complaint filed by the couple’s son, Kailash Kumar.

Police impounded the damaged SUV and are trying to identify its occupants. The vehicle’s owner has been summoned to the police station, and further action will be taken after gathering information about those travelling in it, investigating officer ASI Anil Kumar said. PTI COR SMV SHS

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
