Berhampur, Oct 14 (PTI) A woman was killed, and 10 others were injured when a truck ran over them at a busy square in Odisha’s Ganjam district on Wednesday evening, police said.

The accident took place at Chamakhandi Chhaka on National Highway-16 on the outskirts of Berhampur city. The deceased was identified as Rojalini Mishra (42), a government employee, police said.

She was returning from her office at Chhatrapur to Berhampur on a scooty when the truck ran over her, and she died on the spot, they said.

Other injured persons were admitted to MKCG Medical College and Hospital here, and three of them are stated to be serious. The deceased and injured persons were standing on one side of the highway when the truck coming from the Berhampur side suddenly rammed them, said a police officer.

The truck might have turned toward the roadside to save a car coming from the opposite side, he said.

At least four motorcycles were damaged in the accident. Angry over the incident, local people blocked the NH for some hours. Ganjam SP Harish B C and other senior police officers rushed to the spot and convinced the people to lift the blockade.

Sradhanjali Subudhi, inspector in charge of Chamakhandi police station, said the truck has been seized, but its driver was absconding. PTI COR BBM BBM RG

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
