Faridabad, Oct 5 (PTI) A 29-year-old woman was found hanging at her home in Old Faridabad with her mother alleging that she was being harassed and physically assaulted by her husband, police said on Monday.

Police said the incident occurred on her son’s birthday, on Sunday. Two days earlier, a dispute had allegedly arisen between the couple after the woman spoke to a young man from the neighbourhood over a video call.

The Old Faridabad police handed over the body to the family on Monday after the post-mortem examination. The matter is under investigation and further action will be taken based on the complaint, if any, police said.

The deceased, Soni, and her husband, Surendra, both 29, were originally from Firozabad in Uttar Pradesh. They hailed from the same village and had a love marriage in 2019. About a year ago, they moved to Faridabad and began living in a rented house in Bhud Colony, police said.

Surendra, who works as a bike rider for Rapido, told police that he had left home for work around 6 am on Sunday. Shortly afterwards, a neighbour called and informed him that Soni had been found hanging at home. He then rushed home and informed the police.

“We have two children, a five-year-old son and a six-year-old daughter. Two days ago, Soni was speaking over a video call with a young man from the neighbourhood. A dispute arose between us and when I raised the matter, Soni deleted the chat history of her conversation with the young man. She later died,” Surendra told police.

Meanwhile, Soni’s mother, Bhuri Devi, alleged that Surendra had lured her daughter into a love marriage and was expelled from his village. She further alleged that he had been harassing and physically assaulting her daughter after their marriage.

“We are investigating the matter. No complaint has been filed by the family so far. Action will be taken based on the facts that emerge during the investigation,” said Inspector Vishnu Mitra, SHO of Old Faridabad police station. PTI COR

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
