Bahraich (UP), Jun 11 (PTI) After a woman accused her father-in-law of repeatedly raping her at gunpoint and her husband of pronouncing triple talaq over the phone, police have registered a case against five members of her in-laws’ family, officials said on Thursday.

According to police, the woman, a Lucknow resident, alleged in her complaint that she married a man from the Muslim Bagh locality of Rupaideha town in 2023 according to Muslim customs.

She claimed that while the first two years of marriage were uneventful, her father-in-law later began making advances towards her. Taking advantage of her husband’s absence due to work, the accused allegedly threatened her with a country-made pistol and raped her on several occasions, the complaint stated.

The woman alleged that when she informed her husband about the incidents, he threatened and warned her against disclosing the matter to anyone. She claimed that her father-in-law raped her on January 24, 2026.

When she raised an alarm, her mother-in-law, sister-in-law and brother-in-law reached the spot and allegedly assaulted her instead of helping her, she said.

According to the complaint, the woman later returned to her parental home, after which her husband allegedly pronounced talaq three times over the phone and ended the relationship.

Based on the complaint, police registered a case against the husband, father-in-law, mother-in-law, brother-in-law and sister-in-law under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Act.

Rupaideha Station House Officer Ramesh Kumar Rawat said the husband, during questioning, alleged that his wife had a relationship with another person and that the couple had been facing marital disputes over the issue.

“The matter is under investigation. Further action will be taken based on the facts that emerge during the probe,” Rawat said, adding that no arrests have been made so far. PTI COR CDN ASD ASD
