Mumbai, Aug 12 (PTI) Information on more than 1.8 crore voters in Maharashtra, or 18.46 per cent of the total voters, remained “uncollectable” while 77.77 per cent of electors have been digitised so far under the ongoing SIR of electoral rolls, state Chief Electoral Officer S Chockalingam said on Wednesday.

Mumbai reported a significantly higher share, with information on 30,81,495 voters or 29.61 per cent, categorised as uncollectable, while the figure stood at 21,41,596, or 27.35 per cent, in Mumbai Suburban.

Pune recorded 27,07,496 uncollectable voters and Thane at 19,16,790, as per the data.

“The data shows that information of 7,60,98,153 voters, or 77.77 per cent, had been digitised, while 9,69,54,766 electors, or 99.08 per cent (in Maharashtra), had been covered for distribution. Information of 1,80,60,697 voters, or 18.46 per cent of the state’s 9,78,54,049 electors, could not be collected,” Chockalingam told reporters.

Absent, shifted, dead, or duplicate are the four major reasons for categorising the information as uncollectable, he added.

“Uncollectable” data includes voters who are not available at their registered addresses and whose details may consequently not be reflected in the electoral roll, Chockalingam said.

He said the exercise also involved identifying absent voters, those who have shifted or died, as well as duplicate entries.

“We have held meetings with political parties to make corrections and changes. The electoral roll is changing every day as the process is ongoing,” Chockalingam said.

He said the digitisation and mapping of electoral data are ongoing processes and information relating to around four per cent of voters is still being processed.

The data collected so far accounts for around 96.1 per cent of the electorate in Maharashtra, he said.

The CEO said digitisation of enumerated forms is 63 per cent in Mumbai to date and information on around 30 per cent voters is categorised as uncollectable.

The remaining seven per cent of the data in the state capital is yet to be finalised, Chockalingam said, urging political parties to assist citizens in the process and help ensure that necessary corrections and changes are made.

He said neighbouring Thane city faces a similar problem of “uncollectable” voters like Mumbai because most of its voters travel to Mumbai city every day. There are a lot of immigrants as well, due to which voters are not available at their given address, he said.

Chockalingam appealed to voters to file the enumeration forms at the earliest before the August 17 deadline.

“After August 17, we will announce the draft list of voters which can be rectified as well,” he said. PTI ND NSK

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
