Kolkata, Jun 17 (PTI) West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Wednesday announced a series of measures aimed at strengthening law and order and public services in Falta, asserting that it would be developed into a “model assembly constituency”.

Addressing a ‘Janakalyan Shivir’ (government outreach camp) at Falta in South 24 Parganas district, Adhikari also said a women’s police station would be set up in the area, and additional women police personnel would be recruited.

“We will develop Falta into a model assembly constituency. A separate help desk for women will also be set up at Falta police station. We will not allow unrest and corruption in Falta anymore,” Adhikari, who is also the police minister, said.

He said that a women’s college and a fire brigade station would be set up in Falta as part of the development push.

The BJP had swept the repoll to the Falta assembly seat with a victory margin of more than one lakh votes in the constituency long seen as a citadel of the TMC, whose nominee Jahangir Khan slipped to fourth place and forfeited his deposit.

Khan, who cultivated a larger-than-life “Pushpa”-style persona during the campaign and emerged as one of the most recognisable faces of the contest, dramatically announced two days before polling that he was stepping aside “for Falta’s interest”.

He was arrested near the India-Nepal border in north Bengal on June 8 after he was booked under various charges, including extortion.

The chief minister also announced the extension of the ongoing ‘Janakalyan Shivirs’ across the state by another day to June 18 in view of the “overwhelming response” from people.

“People are turning up in large numbers at these camps. Therefore, the duration of the programme is being extended by one more day. Through these camps, people will be able to access benefits under all eligible schemes of both the Centre and the state government,” he said.

Adhikari said the SEZ industrial zone in Falta would be expanded further, while plans are there to develop port-based economic programmes to boost investment and employment opportunities.

On the healthcare front, the chief minister said, “The rural hospital will be upgraded to 100 beds. Experienced doctors will be appointed and modern medical equipment will be installed.” He also announced the establishment of ‘Jan Aushadhi Kendras’ in the region to improve access to affordable medicines.

These Kendras are retail outlets set up by the central government to provide generic medicines, surgical items, and health supplements to the public at discounted prices.

The chief minister added that the overall focus of his government would be on ensuring balanced development and improved public safety across the constituency. PTI SCH RBT NN
