New Delhi: A video of a traffic constable, identified as G. Babji, running nearly two kilometres during peak commuting hours in Hyderabad to make way for an ambulance has been winning hearts on the internet.

The incident took place in the city’s Koti area Tuesday but the video went viral after Hyderabad Police shared it on its Twitter handle Wednesday evening.

Anil Kumar, Hyderabad additional commissioner of police (traffic), shared the video and said, “HTP (Hyderabad Traffic Police) officer Babji of Abids Traffic PS clearing the way for an ambulance. Well done. HTP in the service of citizens.”

Constable Babji was later rewarded by the Hyderabad Police for his efforts. “Sensitivity for the public is the soul of Hyderabad Police,” said Hyderabad Police Commissioner Anjani Kumar while rewarding Babji.

Social media netizens also showered praise on constable Babji for his efforts. While senior journalist Faye D’Souza called him a hero, she also pointed out a stark reality. “People who don’t give ambulances way on the road are the pits. The fact that we need a cop to do this at all is terrible.”

“What a hero! Traffic cop in Hyderabad runs for 2kms to make way for an ambulance amidst massive traffic jam. Immense respect for such folks selflessly helping the public,” said journalist Aditya Raj Kaul.

There were similar reactions from other Twitter users.
