Kolkata, Sep 9 (PTI) Aam Janata Unnayan Party (AJUP) founder Humayun Kabir’s son Golam Nabi Azad on Wednesday filed his nomination for the by-election to the Rejinagar assembly seat in West Bengal’s Murshidabad district.
The bypoll was necessitated after Kabir resigned from Rejinagar and chose to keep the Nowda seat. He had won both segments in the assembly elections held earlier this year.
The by-election to the Rejinagar and the Nandigram seats will be held on October 6, and the votes will be counted on October 9.
Azad, who was accompanied by his father while filing his nomination, said matching Kabir’s victory margin would be a challenge.
“It is obviously a challenge to attain the margin by which my father won the election from this seat,” he said.
Kabir had defeated his nearest BJP rival in Rejinagar by nearly 59,000 votes.
He floated the AJUP in December 2025 after the TMC suspended him following controversy over laying the foundation stone for a Babri-style mosque in Murshidabad. PTI AMR SOM
