Agartala, Sep 28 (PTI) Voting was underway peacefully on Monday for elections to 587 village committees under Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC), an official said.
Tribal men and women dressed in traditional attires were seen waiting in queues to exercise their franchise amid tight security.
“Voting started in all 1,095 polling booths across the districts at 8 am and is underway peacefully. Long queues are being witnessed in front of the polling booths. Tight security arrangements have been made,” State Election Commission secretary Anurag Sen said.
Of the 4,597 seats in 587 village committees in the Sixth Schedule area, voting is underway for 2,950 seats as 1,644 seats were won by Tipra Motha Party (TMP) and BJP candidates unopposed.
As many as 8,176 candidates from all the major political parties –TMP, BJP, CPI(M), Congress and Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT) — are in the fray.
There are altogether 9,61,977 voters, but the number of electors who are eligible to exercise their franchise on Monday is likely to be lesser as many seats have been won uncontested.
The TTAADC has jurisdiction over two-thirds of the geographical area of the northeastern state, but the population of around 15 lakh is relatively less compared to the plains. PTI PS ACD
