Lucknow, Oct 2 (PTI) Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Friday said the functioning of 57,600 Gram Sachivalayas across the state has brought digital services and online monitoring closer to villagers and created five to seven employment opportunities in each village.

In a message on the occasion of Mahatma Gandhi’s birth anniversary, Adityanath said his government views villages not as the last rung of development but as the first unit of a self-reliant Uttar Pradesh in a “new India”.

According to a statement issued by the Uttar Pradesh government, the chief minister said empowered panchayats and prosperous villages are the foundation of Gram Swaraj, and asserted that there was no place for the “Parivarwadi Model” or dynastic politics in such a system.

In a post on X in Hindi, Adityanath said villages before 2017 received “no development, but only promises”, while politics was conducted in their name without transparency or accountability.

He said villagers earlier had to make repeated visits to tehsils, police stations and district headquarters even for routine tasks such as obtaining income and caste certificates.

The development of rural areas was affected by politics that viewed villages merely as vote banks, he said.

The present government has brought changes to the system and connected Gram Panchayats with various facilities and services, according to the statement.

Adityanath said that over the past nine and a half years, facilities such as e-Gram Swaraj, digital payments and online monitoring have been made available through 57,600 Gram Sachivalayas across the state, helping ensure transparency and accountability in Gram Panchayat functioning.

The operation of Gram Sachivalayas has also created five to seven employment opportunities in each village, he said.

The government is also establishing digital libraries in 11,350 Gram Panchayats across the state, the chief minister said.

For his government, Gram Swaraj is not merely a political slogan but a resolve to realise the vision of villages envisaged by Mahatma Gandhi and make them self-reliant, Adityanath said.

“Empowered Panchayats and prosperous villages are the foundation of Gram Swaraj and a self-reliant Uttar Pradesh. There is no place for the dynastic model in this system of Gram Swaraj,” he said.

He also underlined “Empowered Panchayat, Prosperous Village and Self-Reliant Uttar Pradesh” as the government’s vision for Gram Swaraj. PTI NAV NB

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
