Varanasi, Sep 24 (PTI) The Varanasi Development Authority (VDA) and the Public Works Department (PWD) on Thursday carried out a demolition drive against alleged illegal construction at a restaurant near Kachahari intersection in the Cantonment police station area here, officials said.
Officials said the action was linked to a road-widening project in the area. The road is proposed to be widened from Kachahari intersection to Sandaha intersection.
ACP Cantonment Pragya Pathak, who was present at the spot, said, “The VDA and PWD were carrying out the demolition of Zaika Restaurant at Kachahari intersection.”
Pathak said, “VDA had issued a notice to the restaurant owner some time ago, but the construction was not removed, following which the demolition action was initiated on Thursday.”
Traffic diversions have been put in place at Kachahari intersection and Police Lines intersection in view of the demolition. A police team has also been deployed at the site to ensure the safety of people during the operation, officials said.
Earlier, as part of a project to widen the narrow road in Varanasi’s Dalmandi area, ease traffic movement and develop an alternative and convenient route to the Kashi Vishwanath Dham, more than 170 houses and several religious places, including mosques, had been removed based on mutual consent, registration and compensation.
