New Tehri, Jun 28 (PTI) A one-and-a-half-year-old girl was killed on the spot after a motorcycle she was riding with her parents was crushed by a reversing truck on the Rishikesh-Badrinath National Highway near Mulyagaon here on Sunday, police said. According to the police, the truck carrying wheat from Panipat in Haryana to Srinagar was climbing a slope near Mulyagaon when it began rolling backwards after its gears failed to engage. Seeing the vehicle slide back, the driver of another truck moving directly behind it also started reversing. Ankit, who was riding the motorcycle with his wife and their daughter, Nauni, spotted the truck moving toward them. Before they could steer the two-wheeler to safety, the truck struck the motorcycle. The child fell under the front tyre of the vehicle and died on the spot, the police said.
The parents sustained minor injuries. The wheat-laden truck subsequently overturned on the road, completely blocking traffic on the national highway, they added. Chowki in-charge Yogendra Sharma said a police team reached the spot after receiving information about the accident. The body has been sent for post-mortem examination. Efforts are underway to clear the highway and restore normal traffic flow, he added. PTI COR AKY MPL MPL
