Rudrapur, Sep 22 (PTI) Thieves who had fled after stealing jewelleries and cash worth over Rs one crore from a house in Himachal Pradesh’s Shimla were allegedly robbed by an Excise Department team in Uttarakhand’s Udham Singh Nagar district, police said on Tuesday.
According to the police, a joint operation by the Himachal Pradesh and Udham Singh Nagar police led to the arrest of four individuals from Rudrapur (Uttarakhand), including an Excise Department sub-inspector and a constable. The other two accused include a UPNL employee and a member of the Prantiya Rakshak Dal (PRD).
Approximately 80 per cent of the stolen items has allegedly been recovered from the possession of the accused.
Udham Singh Nagar Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Ajay Ganpati said that the Himachal Pradesh Police has taken the accused into its custody.
The robbery occurred on September 8 at the house of a Fingask Estate resident, Renu Baljee, who was living with domestic helpers. She also found that one of her domestic helpers was missing and suspected his involvement in the theft.
Police registered a case under Section 306 (theft by servant) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, and launched an investigation.
The police said that the stolen items included diamond-studded gold bangles, gold rings and earrings, silver coins, approximately Rs 1.5 lakh in cash, and other valuables.
During investigation, it emerged that the stolen goods were being transported to Nepal via Uttarakhand. Subsequently, they contacted Udham Singh Nagar police.
It came to light that a vehicle transporting the stolen goods had been intercepted at the excise check-post located on the Rudrapur-Rampur border. CCTV footage and other probe indicated the alleged involvement of the four individuals present at the post in misappropriating the goods seized during the inspection, the police said.
The arrested accused have been identified as Excise Sub-inspector Devendra Kumar (56) from Ramnagar (Nainital district), Constable Baljit Singh (35) from Udham Singh Nagar district, UPNL employee Pappu Lal (58), and PRD personnel Naeem. PTI DPT MNK MNK
