New Delhi: A woman in Uttar Pradesh died after her husband and in-laws allegedly tied her hands and inserted an electric wire in her private parts after she refused to sell a one-bigha plot of land she had inherited from her parents, Uttar Pradesh Police said.

Police added that the woman, identified as Nasreen, allegedly had burn marks from electric shocks on six parts of her body, including her private parts.

Israr and Nasreen got married in 2013 and have five children. For the past few months, Israr and his family had allegedly been pestering Nasreen to sell off the only piece of land she owned. She inherited the one bigha of land in the Sharaba area after her parents died.

DSP (Bilaspur) Harshita Singh told ThePrint an FIR had been registered at the Bilaspur police station following the death in Tanda Hurmat Nagar. The police arrested seven accused, including Israr, under sections related to murder, physical or mental cruelty perpetrated by a husband or in-laws towards a woman, criminal conspiracy. and common intention.

“After Nasreen’s mother passed away, Israr, her father-in-law Hanif, sister-in-law Babbo, brother-in-law Noor Alam, sister-in-law Rafat, brother-in-law Istekar and her niece Ishak would frequently pressure her to sell the land registered in her name and hand them the money,” read the FIR accessed by ThePrint.

Nasreen’s aunt filed the police complaint alleging that the accused had on several occasions thrown her out of the house for refusing to sell off the land. “Nasreen had two sisters, and her father had equally divided the land among the three sisters,” she alleged.

She also said that Nasreen repeatedly refused to sell the land “as it was meant for her children’s future”.

“Over this matter, in-laws would daily harass her, hurl abusive language at her, and even kick her out of the house,” read the FIR.

The aunt also alleged that after constant harassment, she and a few village elders suggested to Israr that he either build a house away from his in-laws’ house or rent a place away for them to “ensure her safety”.

Following the suggestion, Israr had allegedly informed Nasreen that the couple, along with their five children, would move to rented accommodation in the Tanda Hurmat Nagar area.
