Jhansi (UP), Jul 14 (PTI) Uttar Pradesh Police on Tuesday arrested a third constable allegedly involved in the robbery of around Rs 25 lakh linked to an illegal betting racket in Jhansi, recovering Rs 12,000 from him, officials said.
With the latest arrest of constable Neeraj Rajput, the total arrests in connection with the case have climbed to seven, including three policemen, they said, adding that three other accused remain absconding.
According to police, the robbery took place on July 11 when Kishan Panchal, who allegedly transported cash related to the betting business, was intercepted by “uniformed personnel” and unidentified miscreants, who threatened him and robbed him of nearly Rs 25 lakh.
The investigation revealed that the money belonged to alleged betting operator Suryansh Yadav and that he had allegedly orchestrated the robbery with the help of the policemen, the police said.
A case was registered at Kotwali police station on July 12 under relevant provisions of the BNS.
On Monday, police arrested six accused, including two constables — Manoj and Raghvendra — and recovered Rs 24.5 lakh of the looted amount before sending them to jail after completing legal formalities.
Kotwali Station House Officer Rajesh Kumar said the third accused, constable Neeraj Rajput, a resident of Sarsai in Datia district of Madhya Pradesh and currently posted at the Jalaun Police Lines, was arrested on Tuesday.
The police said Rs 12,000 of the robbed money was recovered from him.
According to the police, the three constables jointly executed the robbery.
Police said Ankita Yadav, a resident of Premnagar, and two brothers, Nitin and Sanskar Tejwani of Lalta Chowk in Satna, who are allegedly linked to the betting business, are still absconding.
