Ballia (UP), Nov 6 (PTI) Police have arrested two men from Bihar allegedly involved in robbing a temple priest and stealing silver ornaments from shrines in Ballia and neighbouring Ghazipur after an encounter here, officials said.
Both accused sustained bullet injuries in their legs in the exchange of fire on the intervening night of Thursday-Friday, officials said.
Additional Superintendent of Police Dinesh Kumar Shukla said, “A police team intercepted a numberless Innova car around 1 am during checking near the Lakhaneshwar Dih temple. The occupants attempted to flee after opening fire at the police, prompting retaliatory firing.”
The accused, Jishan Alam (42) and Chandrashekhar Kumar (38), both residents of Bihar’s Motihari district, have been admitted to the district hospital for treatment, the officer said.
During interrogation, they confessed to robbing the priest of the Lakhaneshwar Dih temple on October 30 after tying his hands and legs and stealing a silver umbrella and a serpent idol.
They also confessed to stealing from the Panch temple in Ghazipur’s Kasimabad on October 11, Shukla said.
Police recovered stolen ornaments, melted silver from Radha-Krishna crowns, two country-made pistols, ammunition and tools from their possession, the officer said. PTI COR KIS ARI
