Gorakhpur (UP), Jul 15 (PTI) A juvenile held in a theft case escaped from police custody on Wednesday at the district hospital here after allegedly pushing two policemen during a routine medical examination, police said.

The incident has prompted a search operation, with four police teams deployed to trace him.

According to the police, the juvenile, a resident of the Rajghat area, was apprehended around 15 days ago in connection with a theft case and was subsequently sent to a juvenile correction home on the orders of the court.

On Wednesday, three juveniles were brought to the district hospital for routine health check-ups under police escort.

Preliminary inquiries suggest that instead of taking the juveniles individually for examination, two policemen were escorting all three together. Taking advantage of the situation, one of the juveniles, about 16 years old, allegedly pushed the policemen and fled from the hospital premises around 11 am, police sources said.

Officers from Kotwali police station rushed to the hospital and launched a search operation in nearby areas. CCTV footage from the hospital and surrounding locations is being examined, while police teams are conducting searches at the juvenile’s suspected hideouts and gathering information from his family members.

Additional SP City Nimish Patil said efforts were underway to locate the juvenile.

He added that prima facie negligence on the part of the escorting policemen had come to light and departmental action would be taken based on the inquiry report. PTI COR ABN MNK MNK
