Muzaffarnagar (UP), Aug 1 (PTI) A 25-year-old woman was allegedly strangled to death by her brother with the help of other family members in a suspected case of honour killing in Uttar Pradesh’s Shamli district, police said on Saturday.
The incident took place in Khushali Vihar locality under Adarsh Mandi police station limits, and the victim was identified as Garima.
Superintendent of Police N P Singh said a murder case has been registered against the woman’s brother, Arjun, and other family members.
The victim’s father, Sudhir Dhaiya, has been arrested, while the main accused, Arjun, is absconding.
Efforts are underway to trace Arjun, the SP said.
According to the FIR lodged by the victim’s alleged boyfriend, Himanshu, he and Garima were in a relationship, which was opposed by her family. He alleged that the family had fixed her marriage elsewhere, but the engagement was later called off after the relationship came to light.
Himanshu alleged that Garima was strangled to death by her younger brother, with the help of other family members, on July 29.
Police said they were alerted to the incident when the accused were allegedly preparing to perform the woman’s last rites.
The body was sent for post-mortem examination, and the autopsy confirmed death due to strangulation, police said.
Further investigation is underway. PTI COR CDN MPL MPL
