Kanpur (UP), Sep 13 (PTI) A history-sheeter wanted in connection with the killing of a 47-year-old businessman in Uttar Pradesh’s Kanpur was arrested on Sunday following an encounter with police, a senior officer of the force said.
Accused Sanjay Singh Chauhan alias Sanjay Dhaba, 40, sustained bullet injuries in both legs in retaliatory firing and was taken to a hospital for treatment, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central) Atul Kumar Srivastava said.
Chauhan is among the four men accused of assaulting businessman Amit Kumar after he objected to one of them allegedly urinating on the road near the Om Crossing in Kanpur’s Kakadeo area on September 5.
Kumar died during treatment on September 8.
CCTV footage and technical evidence helped police identify the four accused, officials said.
Chauhan, who has 56 criminal cases registered against him since 2009, was absconding since the incident.
During questioning, he allegedly told police that former Kanpur Press Club president and television journalist Avneesh Dixit had advised him to record a video and circulate it on social media claiming innocence and assured him of continued protection, Commissioner of Police Raghubir Lal told PTI.
The allegation has been corroborated in a preliminary inquiry and Dixit’s role is being investigated, he added.
Dixit would be questioned and his name added to the case diary, Lal said.
The journalist was arrested in July 2024 in connection with an alleged attempt to usurp government property worth more than Rs 1,000 crore in the posh Civil Lines area of Kanpur. He was released on bail around 15 months ago, an official said.
The other accused in the case are yet to be arrested, with police teams conducting searches for them. PTI COR ABN RC
