Bareilly (UP), Jul 28 (PTI) Bareilly Development Authority (BDA) on Tuesday demolished a gaushala, accused of encroaching on government land, in the Maulanagar area of the city as part of its drive against unauthorised constructions, officials said.
The demolition was carried out amid heavy police deployment, including personnel from the Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC), to prevent any law and order problem.
Some people protested during the operation, but the authorities completed the exercise without any major disruption.
BDA Vice-Chairperson Soumya Pandey said the action was taken in compliance with court and authority orders against structures allegedly raised on about 5,000 square ft of government land earmarked as a public park.
She said a demolition drive had earlier been scheduled for July 24, but could not be carried out. The authority carried out the operation on Tuesday with bulldozers and adequate security.
According to Pandey, the gaushala, run by Mahamandaleshwar Sanjeev Gaur, was accused of encroaching on government land.
Local residents had complained that the alleged encroachment had deprived children and residents of a public space meant for recreation and walking.
Following an inquiry, the authority declared the construction illegal and issued demolition orders, she said, adding that revenue and technical teams were assessing the extent of the encroachment and the value of the land. PTI COR ABN SHS SHS
