Nanded, Oct 11 (PTI) Authorities in Maharashtra’s drought-hit Nanded district have facilitated creation of ID cards for farmers lodged in jails as undertrials to ensure that their families do not lose access to government welfare schemes, officials said on Sunday.

The exercise was carried out during a special camp organised at the Nanded district prison on Saturday, they said.

While farmer IDs were created for 42 undetrials, e-KYC was updated for 26 others in connection with a loan waiver scheme, officials said.

The farmer IDs, generated under the Centre’s AgriStack initiative, are expected to simplify the process of accessing eligible benefits under schemes such as the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN), crop insurance, crop loans, loan waivers and various agricultural subsidy programmes, they said.

The initiative seeks to ensure that the families of undertrial prisoners continue to benefit from welfare schemes and farming activities despite the absence of the family’s primary earning member, they added.

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
