Meerut (UP), Sep 1 (PTI) Two men wanted in a cow slaughter case were arrested following an encounter with police in the Jani area here, officials said on Tuesday.
On a tip off that accused Mohammad Ahmed and Sameer were planning to carry out a cow slaughter, police cordoned off the Kotthi area on Monday, Additional Superintendent of Police (Rural) Abhijeet Kumar said.
The accused allegedly opened fire at the police team, prompting the police to retaliate, Kumar said.
In the exchange of fire, Ahmed was hit by a bullet in his right leg. He was subsequently arrested along with his associate Sameer and sent to a hospital.
The two were wanted in a cow slaughter case registered at Jani police station, Kumar said.
Police recovered a cow, two illegal country-made pistols, four spent cartridges, three live cartridges and equipment allegedly used for cow slaughter from their possession, he said.
Kumar said several cases, including those related to cheating, the Arms Act and cow slaughter, are registered against Ahmed in Hapur, Muzaffarnagar and Meerut.
A case related to cow slaughter is also registered against Sameer, the police said. PTI COR ABN DV DV
