Mangaluru (Karnataka), Jun 20 (PTI) Mangaluru City Police Commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy has suspended two personnel for allegedly issuing Police Clearance Certificates (PCCs) to 31 migrant workers without due verification or approval from senior officers.

The suspended personnel — Woman Police Constable Asha and Head Constable Manjunath — were serving at Bajpe Police Station, they said.

According to police sources, the duo issued the certificates to migrant workers, primarily from Assam and Bihar, over the past year.

“The two personnel have been placed under suspension for serious lapses in the issuance of Police Clearance Certificates. A detailed inquiry has been ordered,” the Commissioner said in a statement.

The irregularities came to light after a central investigative agency flagged the matter and alerted Mangaluru police.

Preliminary inquiries revealed that several certificates were issued to contract labourers working at the Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Limited (MRPL) without following mandatory background verification protocols, police said.

Many of those workers used the PCCs to apply for passports, they said.

Authorities have raised concerns that some of the certificate recipients may have had criminal backgrounds or links to anti-national activities. The workers had temporary addresses in the region and allegedly obtained the certificates through intermediaries.

Commissioner Reddy has entrusted the investigation to Srikanth, Assistant Commissioner of Police (North Division). “We are taking this matter seriously. A thorough inquiry is underway. Confirmed details will be shared only after the completion of the investigation,” the Commissioner stated. PTI COR AMP ADB
