Mangaluru (Karnataka), Oct 13 (PTI) Two men were electrocuted and a minor boy was injured while fishing in a stream in Dakshina Kannada district, police said on Tuesday.

The deceased were identified as Bharath (28), a resident of Kalmadka in Sullia, and Ramesh alias Ganesh (36), a resident of Guruvayanakere in Belthangady taluk, they said.

The incident occurred at Holakere in Kalmadka village of Sullia taluk on Monday, October 12, police said.

According to police, the two men and the minor boy were fishing in the stream when they allegedly came into contact with an electric current from a nearby plantation owned by Madhusoodan Bhat.

The boy alerted his relatives, following which the three were taken to KVG Hospital. Doctors declared Bharath and Ramesh dead, a senior police officer said.

The injured boy was admitted to the hospital for treatment, he said.

Bellare police have registered a case against Bhat, the plantation owner, for allegedly installing an unauthorised electric connection in the plantation.

The case has been registered under Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which deals with punishment for culpable homicide not amounting to murder, and relevant provisions of the Electricity Act, police said, adding that further investigation was underway. PTI AMP SSK

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
