Bengaluru, Aug 11 (PTI) Two workers were killed and three others injured after a large quantity of soil collapsed at an under-construction underpass here on Tuesday, police said.

The incident occurred when five workers were carrying out RCC casting-related work inside a trench dug to a depth of around 20 feet for the underpass being built by the Bangalore Development Authority (BDA), sources said.

While water accumulated in the trench was being pumped out using a motor, the soil on one side suddenly caved in, police said.

Three workers managed to escape after sensing the danger, while two others were trapped under the debris.

Parimal (31) was found dead at the spot after being buried under the soil, police said.

Another worker, Sonaram (26) was rescued after considerable efforts and shifted to Kanva Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries, they said.

The three injured workers, identified as Sadanand, Sunil and Imtiyaz, have been admitted to a private hospital and are undergoing treatment.

Nandini Layout police, Fire and Emergency Services personnel and residents launched a rescue operation soon after being alerted about the collapse.

Police said an investigation was underway to ascertain whether safety protocols were followed at the construction site. PTI GMS ADB
